Last week, I got to meet Lois Lowry! She was one of the first to start the dystopian literature that I love so much! The first book in this series is The Giver and this is the fourth and final book. I started it yesterday and finished today...it was so well-written and enjoyable. It's told in three parts so that helped to keep the story flowing for me. I so enjoyed reading it and look forward to sharing this book with many students in the coming months.

I finished Dear Bully - wow - that was a tough read. This book confirmed how often bullying goes unseen. After reading such a heart-wrenching book, I decided to go for fantasy, so I picked Paranormalcy by Kiersten White. I have had students for the past three years telling me how great this book is and that I should read it! I even had an advanced reader copy (ARC) from one of my literature professors, but I am just now getting around to it. So far, so good! It's nice to escape from reality sometimes. ;-) I have had a lot of long drives the past week and Mrs. Simmons, our librarian, recommended that I listen to Ender's Game. I have had many students read this book and love it! Ender is a boy genius and is called for duty to battle-training school and then commander-school. This book is definitely science-fiction, but has lots of elements that would appeal to boys and girls. The audio version of the book was enjoyable as the characters each had different voices or would trade off playing parts. Reading or listening, I would highly recommend this book! Last night I started reading a new book and had a hard time putting it down. I've had many students read this book and heard great things about it. Abraham Lincoln's life has always fascinated me. He worked so hard to get where he was and before he had time to celebrate his accomplishments, his life was stolen from him. So far this book has described the events leading up to the night of the assassination including John Wilkes Booth's plans to make President Lincoln's death a certainty. The nonfiction account includes playbills, newspaper articles and other memorabilia from the time. It has been a great read and I am excited to find out more! If you are looking for a great nonfiction read, try this out!
Divergent by Veronica Roth was a GREAT read. It was recommended to me by Mrs. H in our BDJH library. (She always gives me great recommendations.) Beatrice lives in a society divided by factions. Each faction values a character trait and live their daily lives in pursuit of the trait. For example, Beatrice was born in the Abnegation faction, so her family values selflessness. Well, when you turn 16 in this society, things change. the 16 year olds are given an aptitude test and then must choose which faction to join based on their test and personal preference. When Beatrice turns 16, who will she choose? Will she be loyal to her family or venture out to a new faction with different values?
I could not wait to find out what happened! When I got to the end, I wanted to know more, and luckily I found it this is the first of the series! Yay! |
